Let’s take a look at the planning process of this unusual CRAB Drawing Workshop held at Bournemouth University, Faculty of Art, UK in 2016.
The power of drawing and its influence on the creation of art is indisputable.
Stuart Bartholomew, Head of Department, Faculty of Art, Bournemouth University
Bartholomew, who graduated in architecture, started to combine this idea with his knowledge of art, and for the creation of this building, he met with Sir Peter Cook, the head of the CRAB architectural office, about this building in 2014. He wanted to capture this love of art in the building. The CRAB team then created a drawing studio that could serve students from all 17 departments of the faculty.
The interior is designed to serve functions such as drawing, painting, sculpture, drama, architectural activities.
It is thought that natural light has a great influence on art, and a very large opening is left open with a simple glass so that natural light can be used as it is.
Set in a 140m2 space, the studio is described by Cook as “This studio conveys the importance of drawing as the foundation of any creative art.”
“When it came to the design of the studio, I wanted to make sure that all students and all disciplines could work here. Whether it’s fashion design, graphic design, fine art or, like me, architecture, it had to be a place that everyone could use and be inspired by.”Sir Peter Cook
Composed of 17 steel pieces, the iconic blue color of the structure borders the northern end of the campus.
