My Thoughts on Melnikov House

The Melnikov House, an icon of 20th century Russian architecture, was used by Konstantin Melnikov and his family.

Representing the Russian avant-garde, the building stands outside traditional Russian architecture. In 1937, a law passed by Stalin prohibited any modern building in the Soviet Union. This ban not only disqualified Melnikov from teaching and professional architecture, but also led to Melnikov being sentenced to house arrest until his death (1974).

Melnikov House is one of the most important works of Russian architecture, highly unusual for its time and costing Melnikov his career.
