Coral Museum Design Concept and Site

Liuqiu Township, Pingtung County, is an island in Taiwan and the country’s only area with coral. Along the coast, there are eroded coral reefs along the seashore, cliffs in the south and a few small sandy beaches on the west coast.

The design is inspired by the characteristic coral shells of the region based on the area where the building will be located.

On the façade, stickers and recesses were made, trying to convey the texture and structure of the corals.

This iconic entrance void, which is relatively wide and long, gathers the perception to itself and aims to balance the relationship of the building with heat and humidity, makes you feel that even a cursory examination of the building makes you feel that it combines the feeling and nature in itself.

It was aimed for the entrance to exist without being displaced, without shrinking, without being an afterthought, and this iconic entrance was achieved as a result of a construction combined with the idea of coral.

On the façade, in addition to glass and ventilation gaps, balconies and some elements that retract the volume are used and this porous structure is wanted to be felt well.

My Thoughts About Coral Museum

Located on an island, this building has taken one of the most important features of the island as its mission and concentrated its structure on it. This building, which has succeeded in conveying the coral texture with an architectural language, has designed and maintained the fullness-void and volumetric plays very successfully. Although it has spacious interiors and is a pension, it has a detailed and modern structure that cannot be seen even in most hotels.

What do you think about the Coral Museum? Do you think this coral structure and the hostel functions work together? Is there anything wrong or incomplete about its structure and transparency?
