Designed by Le Corbusier and completed in 1929, Villa Savoye, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered one of the most important buildings of the career of Le Corbusier, one of the greatest architects of the 20th century, and one of the most important buildings in the world.

Located in Poissy, Paris, France, Villa Savoye is known for its modern approach to French houses and its celebration of the new machine age. Le Corbusier expressed his opinion on this subject by saying “This house is a living machine.” It is a living example of Corbusier‘s 5 design principles.

According to the Pilotis principle, the building is designed to be above the ground and cut off from contact with the soil, the settlement is moved to the upper level with columns. The ground floor is designed only as a service floor and the pilotis, that is, the ‘hovering’ effect, is tried to be achieved.

According to the second principle called Flat Roof Terrace , the roof is designed as an open and spacious space that can be lived in.

According to the 3rd principle, the use of horizontal windows can increase lighting by up to 40%. But this has not been conclusively proven.

According to the open plan system, boundaries were removed from the plan and a spacious and open system was introduced. By not giving the walls a load-bearing role, Corbusier was able to design the distinction between private and public spaces by taking aesthetic concerns into consideration.

As the 5th and last principle, Corbusier was able to separate the facade from the building since he did not assign the task of carrying the house to the walls and paved the way for design freedom in this field.
