Prof. Dr. Architect Gündüz Gökçe passed away on October 15, 2024.
Gündüz Gökçe, former rector of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, one of the leading names in the Turkish architectural community, successfully held many important positions throughout his academic career.
The funeral ceremony of Gündüz Gökçe held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 10:30 am at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Osman Hamdi Bey Hall. Following the ceremony, He was buried in the Kilyos cemetery after the midday prayer at the Teşvikiye mosque.
About Gündüz Gökçe
- Date and Place of Birth: Gündüz Gökçe was born on October 2, 1933 in Izmir.
- Education: In 1958 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (now Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University). After his graduation, he took part in the executive staff of the Building and Vocational Basic Education courses.
- Academic Career:
- In 1970, he received the title of professor.
- He served in various administrative positions at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University as head of department, head of department, dean (1985-1987), vice rector (1982-1987) and rector (1987-1996).
- In 1997, he was appointed as a member of the General Assembly of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) by President Süleyman Demirel and served in this position until 2001.
- Retirement and Final Period: After his retirement in 2000, he continued to teach at Yeditepe University and Koç University. He also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Kadir Has University between 2001 and 2003. In his last semester, he taught the course “Comparative Arts” at Işık University Faculty of Fine Arts and Koç University, which deals with the relationship between the arts of music, painting, sculpture and architecture in the historical process.
His legacy
Gündüz Gökçe is known for his contributions to the field of architecture and his commitment to education. During his long academic career, he trained many students and made significant contributions to architectural education. Gökçe’s passing is considered as a great loss in the architectural community.
